- Company Has Now Completed Base Infrastructure of PD Solution Production Facility
KNOXVILLE, KY. — November 5, 2015 — Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA), the continent’s leading provider of kidney care products and services, announced today that key components of its 280,000 square foot Knoxville peritoneal dialysis (PD) solution manufacturing facility – including its base infrastructure, mixing, filling and sterilization equipment — have been installed, enabling it to begin engineering testing.
Once operational, the plant will increase current production of PD solution, easing the supply strain in the industry. Peritoneal dialysis is a home-based, life-sustaining treatment option for people with kidney failure, and PD solution is an essential element of this process.
“The nationwide shortage of PD solution has impeded the ability of many kidney patients across the country to choose peritoneal dialysis as a treatment option, and we are committed to addressing this problem,” said Mark Costanzo, President, Fresenius Medical Care Renal Therapies Group. “In addition to increasing our production capacity of PD solution, our Knoxville plant will allow us to more efficiently supply this product to the people who need it.”
In time, Fresenius Medical Care’s Knoxville facility will also produce other products and solutions that support various dialysis treatment modalities, and will eventually expand to more than 400,000 square feet. Following full completion of the facility and pending U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval, it is scheduled to begin production in early 2017.
